Math Level of AP Statistics

Well, frankly, I suck at math. As in, I just finished repeating algebra 1 and I'm in tenth grade. I'm not sure what it is about math that makes it so confusing to me, but it is undoubtedly the subject I have to work hardest at.

That said, I would like to take AP stats my senior year. I want to major in psychology, and everything I have heard says that stats is the best math class to take for that. I also want to take a class through my CC next year that teaches stats specifically through a lens of psych.

So, my questions are: how hard is AP stats? Is it manageable for someone who's not great at math? Is it number-oriented or critical thinking-oriented? Is it really the best math class for psych? Is it FUN? :D

For stats, you mainly just use the calculator. Heck, some units in stat aren’t really math. You just use common sense. (Like random sampling). But if you were to take AP Stat, I would recommend that you would complete trig/alegbra 2 otherwise you might be lost. There are times when you use the quadratic formula (alegbra II topic) and binomial expansion (alegbra II in some schools, precalc in others). So there are times when Stats acts like a traditional math class. If you have trouble in alegbra, I doubt you would fine success in AP Stat, even though AP Stat is a light AP.

^ This really. A calculator and basic arithmetic is all you need.

I’m not sure how precalc = basic arithmetic. haha. But okay. I ended up with an A in algebra, understanding nearly every concept, and I’m starting geometry on Monday, so I should be well through trig by the time I start my senior year. Thanks!

Stats is pretty basic, but as some of the other people have said, a good background in algebra will come in handy.

Honestly, it depends on your teacher and you. I love Calc, but hate stat (taking both this year). It is tedious and boring, and, in my humble opinion, has much more to do with memorizing button pushing sequences and formulaic responses.

If you can GET algebra this year, I think you could do it. But without a solid foundation, I don’t think you would do well and it would just make senior year stressful.
