Okay, I got into Cal Poly for the Fall 2007 quarter with a major under MATH.

My overall GPA is a 3.83 (minus the 4.2 GPA I got last semester), however, I’m a bit concerned about my major.

The highest math course I’ve gone to was Pre Calculus (I’m doing STATS this year) and didn’t move on to Calculus because I got a D last semester in PreCal…surprising, I know, because Cal Poly still accepted me.

Anywho, besides the 1 D in PreCal last semester I do thoroughly enjoy math, so when applying to Cal Poly SLO I entered that as my major as I plan on teaching it one day–HOWEVER…

Am I in way over myself? Yes, I enjoy math, but my PreCal performance has kind of unenthused me of whther or not I’m really capable of succeeding in a Math Major or if I’m just being naive, thinking I can do it but end up failing out of my major. I certainly don’t want to be naive when it comes to my decisions of my future, and I don’t know how valid an answer to this question may be, since everyone is different, but is a Math Major doable? Or am I just getting too far ahead of myself and setting myself up to fail?

Thanks in advance :)

As long as you are determined, you should be fine.

I wouldn't sweat it if Math is what you want to do. That D in Precalculus shouldn't be the determining factor in your future. I know I was really confused in Precalculus because of the horrid teaching, especially the second term with all that trigonometric stuff, but I still managed an A/B. Could have just been the teaching for you; I had to practically self-teach myself the second term because my teacher was so god awful. I went on to Calculus the following year and was rather successful.

Just wondering why you aren't taking Calculus this year. :( That class was fun. :)

Thanks for somebody finally answering my post :)

Relentless--

I actually loved PreCal, I loved the trig stuff and aced that area quite well, the things that killed me in it were the Limit crap. I had a horrible teacher who, and I'm serious, did not know what he was doing. He would always make errors, look at the answer key in his teaching booklet, correct it on th eboard without explaining why because he didn't know why. But I'm not blaming him as there were a lot of students who succeeded that class.

I didn't go on to Calculus because I didn't want to risk getting another D again. Plus, I love Statistics also. It's a very fun class for me and I'm glad I took it. It kind of rejuvenated my faith in the math world because I forgot what it was like to get A's on math tests again ;) I'll be taking Calc next year though. I'm just intimidated by all you super smart math and engineering folk, and I REALLY don't want to relive another PreCal experience again.

don't worry about it. my current pre cal teacher got a F in Algebra his senior year (he showed us his report card to prove it) and had to take all those remedial math classes in college. He was determined to get through it and he did. He turned out to be the best math teacher i've ever had! I can't wait to have him again next year for ap cal! So, as long as you're willing to do it, you'll be fine.

I absolutely hated precalculus and I still think it's harder than calculus. I have gotten A's in both my calc classes here at poly. Don't sweat it.

THANK YOU. That makes me feel so much better :)

just wondering what was ur MATH sat
