Does anyone who is majoring in math at Michigan feel that the adacamics are very rigorous. Im thinking about majoring in math and would like to know whether or not to do so.

The Honors Mathematics sequence is very difficult, as other ppl here will tell you, but if you're up to it, it's a good experience. The Intro Calc courses (1-4) here for engineers are very watered-down and disappointing though. Although I got pretty good grades, everything is still a black-box to me.

I think that Michigan's high-end math classes are superb (and very challenging), whereas some of the lower ones aren't as good. The main complaint I see on places like ratemyprofessor.com is that professors don't know how to teach down to kids in the lower classes. That being said, many of these professors end up being very good when they have a more...competent class.

There are 5 different calculus sequences (Applied, Honors Applied, Regular, Honors Regular, High Honors). If you're thinking about becoming a pure math major, you should at least try the high honors math sequence. The people who stick out/survive that sequence are basically all the honors math majors. How much you cover can vary some from year to year, but with the teachers I had we basically covered all of undergraduate mathematics in 4 semesters (analysis, linear algebra, abstract algebra, topology, started differential geometry). I think everybody in our class is moving on to the introductory graduate courses next semester.

If you're interested in doing something more applied and not as much just math, you might want to do one of the other sequences. They won't be nearly as difficult, but will give you experience that's a little more based in reality than in the abstract theory you'd get from the high honors sequence.

what's the average gpa for an honors math major? I'm interested b/c I want to go to med school later.

Chibearsfan should be coming soon...

i would like to have at least a 3.6 GPA. Is majoring in math going to make this much more difficult than majoring in something else.

I haven't had much problem staying about a 3.6 GPA and I have one of the lower GPA's amongst the math majors I know.
