How is the mathematics department at JHU? I would still be a Pre-med but I am thinking of majoring in Mathematics rather than Biology/neuroscience. Are the math classes hard, or do u need to be a Math savant in order to do well. I like numbers and calculus and algebra, but I don't like statistics. What courses would be required in order to be a math major?

You can find the requirements on the department website.

No, you don’t need to be a math savant to do well. If you plan to take the minimal requirements needed for the major then it probably isn’t much more difficult than any other major, though to earn As in analysis and algebra you have to be somewhat competent (that is, you can’t breeze your way through unless you are a math savant).

If you actually want to get something out of the major and you plan to take the honors courses and possibly graduate courses, and you want As in these courses, then yes, you actually need to be pretty good at math. In the junior, senior, and graduate level courses, almost all of the grades are B+ or higher but that’s because the only people who last past the first two weeks or so can do the work.

I entered with nothing more than AP Calculus AB and finished with a year and a half worth of graduate courses. I’m not a math prodigy but I worked hard and actually enjoyed the coursework.
