I'm a future student and I just recently completed my orientation. My adviser recommended that because I did good on the math placement I should consider going for a math minor (I'm currently trying to become a business major) and that I take Calc 2. The way she described it is that I'll have to take 2 additional math classes that won't count towards getting into Kelly. If anyone who is experienced out their can tell me what to expect with my schedule and if going for the math minor is worth it.

I'm starting with 15 Credits already through AP Tests so she recommended that I try to build a light schedule around the Math n Bus class for my first semester to see how things play out.

I'm mainly concerned that if I go for the math minor, I'll end up behind other students trying to get into Kelly and it'll end up hurting me in the long run, I'm also worried about the workload that it'll bring.

Current Schedule:
Math-M 212 - Calculus 2
Bus-K 201 - The Computer in Business
Phil-P 100 - Intro to Philosophy
Hper-H 263 (8Weeks) - Personal Health
Hper-E 185 - Volleyball

If you are not are not a DA, I’d highly recommend getting out of Calc 2 right now. Going for a math minor is great, but I suggest waiting until after you get into Kelley.

These freshmen were told by their advisors after taking the math placement test to take M211. The majority of them started out their IU careers with a big mistake regarding the Kelley calculus requirement by not just taking M118. Many of these students probably will not get into Kelley because of their M211 grade.

What kind of an advisor would base a decision like becoming a math minor on one placement test alone. How long was the placement test, like 25 questions?

. . . . Sorry, just noticed your advisor recommended M212. That is even crazier! Your getting into Kelley is way more important than any minor could be.

The advisers you meet with during orientation are trying to give you a schedule your first semester that will progress you through your degree program. They are not giving you recommendations on what is the best way to achieve a goal (Kelley admission, Honors admission, Hutton admission etc…).

Listen to bthomp. I was one question from a perfect score and only took finite. I got in Kelley this past spring. M211 is unnecessary right now. Also consider how/if a math minor would help you become more desirable to companies.

The OP is asking about M212, not M211. Think about it like this. You are taking on a significant amount of risk by taking M212, and there absolutely zero potential reward. You can still get a math minor without taking Calc 2 freshman year. And you’ll face very little to no risk pursuing a math minor once you’re in Kelley.

I’ve looked into switching into Finite, but the only class that’s open is a Mon/We/Fri 8:00 AM class, worth it?

I put myself on the waitlist for a finite class at spot number 3, is it likely other kids will drop out because I really don’t want to have to take an 8AM Friday class.

I don’t know if I’m high Jacking or not but here is my situation

I’m already a DA to Kelley, but Kelley Honor’s is very important to me. The math placement test the other day at orientation was a joke in what I would consider the actual class to be like.

I had a Kelley adviser and she worked with me to get a schedule that should allow for a 3.7+ which I need to get Kelley Honor’s and Huttson Honor’s. I’m going to take m211 next semester and I’ll take Finite this semester just to get it over with.
