Math Olympiad , Math counts, AMC talk

Just curious to see how people are doing with the studying, for the competitions and how people have done in the past years.
Thanks in advance.

In theory I’m studying for the AMC 12 again, but I’ll just suck at it the same way I did last year. (My school doesn’t have a math club and I never studied for it. I went in late and then left early because I was nervous…I got a 54, lol.)

I am, trying to make Usamo. Got a 5 on the Aime last year(7th grade)

I had no idea the AMC 12 even existed until about two days before the test, but I took it anyway and got a 72. I was really into MathCounts in middle school and got first at my 8th grade regional, but I hadn’t done that kind of math in a while. I probably won’t spend much time studying this year since I’ve got a ton of other stuff to do.

This is my first year taking the test, but I studied last year for it, do you guys want to use this thread to help each other.

I made the USAMO once (but bombed the following AIME in 2011). Best preparation is simply do lots of problems. They don’t have to be from AMC’s or AIME’s either, you can use problems from ARML, CHMMC, HMMT, mock AMCs, problems from other countries, etc.

@wcao you might make usamo as an eighth-grader! GL!
My middle school mathcounts team had over 40 people and I placed in the top ten at state. My high school has 5 people (including me). My school is too stupid/unsupportive of nerds. Our school doesn’t offer the AMCs either…

Quick word of experience from practice tests and years of math competition experience: if you didn’t start early (e.g. 5th/6th grade) with math competitions, you’ll most likely not make USAMO. The level of AIME questions are well over standard math curricula of schools.

The people who typically win USAMO, get at least a 10 on the AIME in middle school.

I’m assuming you’re taking the AMC 12? A 6-8 can suffice for the AMC 10.

Then again, cutoff varies year by year. 2011 was pretty unusual in that the USAMO cutoff was 188 for AIME 1 and around 215 for AIME 2.

Can somebody list these math competition in order of difficulty & prestigious?
USAMO
AIME
AMC
Math count
ARML
CHMMC
HMMT
MathPath

any other not listed above?

USAMO is most prestigious (and hardest to get into).

CHMMC, HMMT, and ARML problems tend to be about AIME level. Maybe a little harder.

Next comes AMC. It’s hard to compare prestige of MATHCOUNTS and AMC since MATHCOUNTS is a middle school competition. Making nationals is nice though (and a lot of fun!). I can’t say much about MathPath since I never participated in it.

Is there a great difference in difficulty between AMC 10 and AIME

Yes, my score of 114 on the amc 10 got me a 82.5 on the amc12 and a 5 on the Aime.

This is what the last few problems always look like to me.

^ that’s what happens if you don’t try to understand the problems and attempt the dig deeper.

How many problems are on the AIME?

15…

How much time is there
