Math or Economics?

Anyone interested in finance/trading? Of the two, which one is preferred? I like both, but I'm more interested in economics. I don't want to double major, but I would consider a minor. Also, what about statistics?

Thanks!

Have you completed all the prereqs for math?

Yes. I’m a transfer student who got in as pre-economics.

I’m thinking I’ll just go economics and take some upper-division classes. I think I would be happier studying economics, even though I can and do enjoy math. I guess I enjoy the decision making and business aspects, which is why I chose economics in the first place.

If you want to do finance/trading, math will be much more useful for you. You can pick up the economics in the real world, but you cannot pick up the math as easily.

If you look at Berkeley’s career website, econ majors have better jobs, in my opinion. However, the average pay is lower. But I think the jobs look more interesting and probably include bonuses.

You should probably go with economics. Math gets pretty theoretical and abstract in upper-div and it’s really only for people who love math. The main reason math majors have higher average pay is because 1. actuaries get paid pretty well and 2. some of them go into engineering/computer science jobs which also pay very well. But I’m guessing you wouldn’t want to do either job so go with econ if that’s the case.

Thanks guys. I decided to go with math. I know I seem confused, but it is because I am! :)

I only need math 55, American cult. req., math 110, math 113, math 185, math 104, and 4 electives, for a total of 10 classes to graduate. Over the span of two years, that is not a lot of classes. To fill my schedule up, I will take economic/finance courses that relate to my interests. I think the tipping point for me was browsing some forums. Thanks again guys! And I do enjoy math a lot!

Are you going down the applied math road? If I could, I recommend you take math 55 during the summer. I spoke with some helpful people on this forum and they said that taking any upper div without it is very difficult.

Hello,

I am taking discrete math and social welfare (ACR) during the summer. What is course 134? I’m not sure if I’m going to go the applied route. If I do, I will concentrate in economics or statistics.
