Math or Physics at Bard?

D2 is a current junior. I think Bard could fit her very well in terms of personality and interests, but am not sure about the quality of their math and especially physics majors because the programs are pretty small. Any insight would be really useful.

The departments are definitely small. If your daughter is looking for the breadth of an MIT, it’s not there. However, my son has a number of friends who have majored in math. They’re all very happy with the faculty and their experience. My son, (a gifted math student) has really enjoyed his classes. However, it is true that if your daughter wishes to continue, in math, at least, at the PhD level, she might find it easier to be accepted into those programs if she did her undergrad at a larger research university. The course offerings in physics are limited. My suggestion would be for her to email the chairs of the two departments and discuss with them her interests and her concerns - they will share with her what her experience at Bard would be like - both in its merits and its limitations.

My son is a senior at Bard. He majored in Physics, and was just accepted into a very prestigious PhD program in nuclear physics, with a TA. Yes, the program is small. Bard does not have the lab facilities that bigger schools have. But, the student teacher ratio is fabulous, and Bard really teaches those kids to think. My son is using lab facilities at other universities to do his senior project research, and Bard is very supportive of this. I would not hesitate to send a child there for a science or math degree. Good luck.

Monkey13 - Congratulations to your son. That’s terrific. I’m glad Bard served him well.

That’s great to hear. D2 really enjoyed her visit to Bard. We may end up reaching out to you for more info.
