Math PhD admissions/rejections thread

Nothing for me yet either on UPenn, and I didn't get the acceptance email from Michigan today either. Seriously... I really need a school to accept me, this is starting to get lame.

Not to be a downer but I think UPenn updated the admitted students page on the online site. I am pretty sure I did not get in.

This is turning into a brutal month.

I didn't get a Michigan email either. Blah. I wish schools who plan to reject me would go ahead and send an email saying as much. Keeping my fingers crossed while pondering why people on gradcafe are posting results from schools I applied to is exhausting.

Absolutely crushing, not that I thought I'd get in, I always knew p<.2 at top 25 schools, just I wish I could get into 1 school and then get rejected from the others. I also wish these places would be clearer about what stats and things you need to have a legit chance, obviously I didn't.

Luckily I've already got UNC, it does take the stress off.

My stats (GPA, GRE) are good, but I have no research experience, no REUs, etc. So I applied to a few top-20 schools, a few mid-level schools, and then a few schools ranked below 50 (lowest was ranked 85 on one site). I really recommend to anyone planning to apply in the future to have at least one school that you feel would be crazy not to accept you. If you end up there, you might be a big fish in a small pond, rarely a bad thing.

I got into UPenn with >3.9+ GPA and a >90% GRE subject. As an international I had no idea what schools required.

I got rejected from UPENN today. I understand, much like what orangelights said, the probability to getting into any top 25 is low. I thought I had an outside chance of getting into UPENN. What really stinks is that UPENN is a great fit for me, I wanted to pursue geometry and physics. This is some really disappointing news.

I'm trying not to take it personally and I'm trying to stay positive. I just hope I can get into one or two of the top 25 schools I applied to.

Congrats and best of luck to all who have received admits.

I'm sorry to hear that SBUMathgrad. It's good to see that you're keeping a positive attitude. How did you find out you didn't get accepted?

So Let's summerize our results so far, from memory after reading:
Dilksy into Berkeley and Minnesota
Fetton into Berkeley, Ohio State, UIUC
Benjgi into UNC
Crispyk into UIUC
SBUmath -
Orangelights -

Maybe such a list will turn out to be a good reference in the next few weeks, worth a shot.

can engineering major apply for math master's program?

I just got an acceptance from Penn by e-mail!!! :-)

You most definitely can, you just have to find a program that is willing to accept you with your particular background. That should be less of an issue for applied math than for pure math.

Congrats Crispyk, so you are all set now, you are going to Penn?

i havent got into anywhere either. i am at the verge of internally collapsing.
i have given up on top schools and am just waiting for the mid and low ranked schools to decide.
congratulations to everyone who got accepted already.

Don't collapse entirely before March! I was talking to a physics grad student today who seemed surprised at my pessimism about OSU and Michigan. He said that he had several admits in the "second round." It's still a little early.

(Yes, I know. With the economy this year it all seems tougher...)

Thanks orangelights! I can't say that I'm for sure going to Penn-- I'll have to visit and it will depend on any other offers I may get-- but there is high probability that I'll be there next year!

The waiting is so hard...I wish I could be more productive and work on research/assignments, but my brain is simply not cooperating.

I'm going for Applied Math, and noticed that some people from thegradcafe.com have received acceptances via email to a couple schools on my list. No email for me :( But I guess acceptance notices don't have to come all at once...

Did anyone apply to UCLA or Caltech? Evidently UCLA has begun sending out very generous offers, hopefully to their top picks with many more to come (last year they admitted ~130 students over the span of a week). And I haven't heard anything about Caltech's decisions.

UCLA admits that many?!

It's getting quite late for Caltech, it's a bit surprising. (Same goes for Yale). Last year rejections went out on 2/13.

Good Luck!

Yea, UCLA admits 40% of the people who apply if you can believe it.

I don't know what is going on with Caltech; they had pretty much wrapped up admissions this time last year. Could it be that they've already sent out offers and the set of people who receieved them is disjoint from the set of people using Grad Cafe? Seems statistically unlikely. Could be true for Yale though.
