Math placement exam & AP Calc

I got a 5 on the ap calc ab exam, which lets me go into math-290 and such. so do i have to take a math placement exam?

yeah, its in the letter

<a href="http://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/mathplacement.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.mccormick.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/mathplacement.html</a></p>

We ask that all incoming first year McCormick students (even those with AP or IB credit) take this exam. It is a non-binding exam so it will not hurt anyone to take it. Even students without any calculus background will take a portion of the exam.

Various scores on the AP Calculus (either AB or BC) and on the IB (Higher Level International Baccalaureate) Exams may result in earning credit for MATH 220 and MATH 224. For some students, our recommendation will be for them to forego one or both of those credits and take the corresponding courses here at Northwestern. Credit earned by taking the courses will eliminate any credit earned through AP or IB as you may not earn multiple credits for the same course. Your specific credit implications, if any, will be detailed to you when you receive your placement recommendation.

there ya go, basically they say, yes, you have to take it, you may place out of it but we have to double check with our own curriculum.

McCormick Students can't take math 290 anyways, it's prohibited (check the math website). It's because a lot of the material coincides with the required Engineering Analysis class. You have to take the math placement to get into Honors Calculus (for engineers), which is actually part of the Applied Math Engineering major.

You don't actually need to have placed out of Math 224 to take the EA Honors track, although that's exactly what I remember reading in all their letters and stuff. As long as you're taking Math 224 or above, you can take EA Honors and get EA over with by the end of spring quarter. The reason is because EA is 4 quarters total (for almost everyone), so the regular EA 4 comes fall qtr of your sophomore year, but honors students take EA 4 Honors in the spring, simultaneously with EA 3 Honors. Alternativelly, you could try to sneak into EA4 Honors without actually having taken the first 3 parts with the honors students. Rumor has it that some people really did that :)
