Math Placement Exam way too hard?

Okay I just downloaded all of the crap for the math placement exam today since my orientation is in a week. I started up the Algebra practice test, and gave up around question 20. There is no way in hell I am going to pass this thing. I had maybe 3-4 questions I actually knew, and the rest were ridiculous. Definitely not Algebra, it felt more like Calculus. Why is this test so hard? What happens if I can't finish it. I'm having a hard time believing everyone that goes into UCF can pass this thing.

Is there a way I can opt out of it and just go into College Algebra? I already took that and passed with an A, but by the looks of this test there is no way I am going to be able to pass the practice exam with a 35% to even attempt the actual test.

When I went to orientation like 3 years back, a buncha kids didn’t even bother taking it, including myself. If you don’t take it, I think they just put you into college algebra. Doesn’t affect your acceptance in any way. Do they still do those 2 day orientations? It sucks.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I’ve got to fly out there next Sunday for orientation. Total waste of money, but it will be cool to see the campus.

If you don’t take the placement test you will get placed in the lowest possible math class, which is not College Algebra. It might be Intermediate Algebra, but I think there might be one class lower (I’m not sure). You need a 35% on the practice and a 50% on the actual test to be placed in College Algebra. If you’ve taken College Algebra through dual enrollment or another college than the credit will transfer. If you’re going into a major that requires a lot of math than I’d retake the class since you’re having trouble with the test. You wouldn’t want to be placed in a higher math class and then not be able to handle it.

The test was really hard, I finished all my required college math classes through dual enrollment and I still struggled with the test. Since I had all my credits done though I technically didn’t need to take the test. So keep that in mind! If you don’t need to take anymore math classes than you don’t need to take it!

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been reviewing in my old College Algebra textbook, so maybe I’ll be able to figure it out later this Summer.

Hm, I didn’t know they could place you in the lowest math class even if you don’t take the test. You should ask at orientation just to make sure though. Also, sometimes if you can’t find a good professor, be a transient student at one of the CC’s. I wish I would’ve known this freshman year. I met a lot of kids at the CC I did transient at who also attended UCF. I’m not too fond of the math department at UCF and their required math lab hours, even for lower level classes.
