Math Placement Exam

Do we need to have a graphing calculator?

No.

you technically can do all the problems without a calculator. that's what they tell you before the exam. and after taking it without one, i believe them

And be prepared for no calculators in most if not all math classes at UCLA. :D

is the test difficult?
mostly algebra, trig, or calculus?

i hope to god its not calc- i really struggled through AP Calc BC :(

Algebra, trigonometry and some pre-Calculus... If you scored 700+ on the SAT II Math IIC test, then you're probably going to score 60/60 on the Mathematics Diagnostic Test.

no Calculus on the test?

"Algebra, trigonometry and some pre-Calculus... If you scored 700+ on the SAT II Math IIC test, then you're probably going to score 60/60 on the Mathematics Diagnostic Test."

That sounds like a stretch. I don't remember my math. ;)

There wouldn't be any reason for calculus to be on the exam as the purpose of it to determine whether the student is ready for it. If you knew any of it, and in theory demonstrated that via AP Calc, then you wouldn't need to take the exam!

what if we pass the ap and then take the math diagnostic, scoring a low average? will the ap exam outweigh the exam?

yes. if you've passed AP Calc AB, then you'll get placed into math 31B. the only reason someone who passed AP calc would want to take the math diagnostic is if you think you forgot enough pre-calc/trig that you would want to take math 31A (which is basically calc AB).

kfc, what is a passing grade? 3, 4, or 5?
I got a 4 and on the AP Credit site, does that mean I get to skip Calculus or take Calculus?

It's not possible to enroll in intro calc when you already have AP credit.

somebuddyelse: If you got a 4 on Calc AB, then you don't get to skip any courses. If you got a 4 on Calc BC, then you get credit for Math 31A, which is the first half of single variable calc... AB I suppose.

looks like the requirements changed since i last checked. i think ucapplicant05 is correct:

http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditLS.htm

if i remember correctly, back when i was a freshman, passing AP Calc AB with a score of 3 or better means you get placed into math 31B. i could be wrong but that's what i remember...

Yes indeed... It looks like UCLA has recently raised the standards for AP Calculus AB credit, such that freshmen now require a score of 5 to be placed into Math 31B. (A score of 4 gives you generic "Calculus" credit, which is unknown to me.) There are simply way too many incoming freshmen with scores of 3 or higher on the test (about 75%) to grant them all Math 31A credit.

it's also a national trend (at least in the ivies) where students who got 5's on AP calc aren't ready for ivy league level calculus. admins there have been reluctant to grant credit for APs because of this.

could be a similar situation here, where those with 3's arent ready for UCLA level calc.

thanks :0)
so i should sign up for math 31A!

so i got a 3 on my calc ab test, what happens next?
do i still take the diagnostic exam?

JUst got back from orientation and had a great time. Anyways in response to the Math questions if you are in Letters and Sciences and you got a score of...

AB - 3 you get 4 units unassigned
AB - 4,5 Math 31A credit (4 units)
BC - 3 you get 8 units unassigned
BC - 4,5 Math31A, Math31B (8 units)

All of these satisfy the Quantitative Reeasoning req.

If you are in the Engineering School and you got a score of...

AB - 3,4 you get 4 units unassigned
AB - 5 you get 4 units unassigned and it may be applied towards 31A (this means you can choose to take 31A over or you can skip it.)
BC - 3 you get 8 units unassigned
BC - 4 you get 8 units unassigned and you can skip 31A if you want
BC - 5 you get 8 units unassigned Math31a and 4 units may be applied towards 31B

This is from the orientation booklet I got. The School of Art and Theateris in here too but I'm just too lazy to put it in. Ask if you really want them.

If you are not able to skip a math class I believe you must take the test. For engineering majors if you don't get a 5 on AB or 4 or 5 on BC you have to take the test.

^ The above is incorrect.

For the AB Exam:

A score of 3-4 receives unassigned Calculus credit (4.0 units)
A score of 5 receives credit for Math 31A (4.0 units)

For the BC Exam:

A score of 4 receives credit for Math 31A (4.0 units) + unassigned Calculus credit (4.0 units)
A score of 5 receives credit for Math 31A + Math 31B (8.0 units)

Unassigned credit means the units do not exempt you from any required courses but they are credited towards the 180 units needed for graduation.
