wait, so which one is it

dragon17 is correct.

Dragon17 I'm assuming you are saying that the orientation booklet is wrong. Like I said I just copied it from there. They might be wrong who knows I didn't check anywhere else.

Hey CyberDragoon, can you please post for the school of art and theater?

This is taken directly from the Orientation Booklet I received at Session 101. Any errors contained therein are not my fault.

Arts and Architecture

AB
Score 3 - 4 units unassigned
Score 4, 5 - Math 31A (4 units)

BC
Score 3 - 8 units unassigned
Score 4, 5 - Math 31A, 31B (8 units)

All satisfy quantitative reasoning req.

School of Theater, Film, and Television

AB
Score 3 - 4 units unassigned
Score 4, 5 - 31A (4 units)
These scores satisfy 4 units of Science/Math req

BC
Score 3- 8 units unassigned
Score 4, 5 - Math 31A, 31B (8 units)
These scores satisfy 8 units of Science/Math req

The orientation booklet was probably printed before the update. They changed the mathematics AP credit last week. A 4 is no longer the same as a 5 and does NOT exempt you from Math 31A.

Does anybody know about the Math 3 series? I think I'm gonna take that series since I'm in life science and I got a 5 for calc AB. Does that hold any merit for the 3 series?

A 5 on the AB test gives credit for math 3A. However, you still have to take 3B. The 3-series is for life sciences majors.

*** why didn't they fix the booklet.

Do I need to take it if I took Calculus 1A/1B at Cal State Fullerton (I'm an engineer)? I'm not looking forward to taking a math test on the first day of orientation. Thanks.

I am in the class of 2009 so when I entered UCLA, a 4 on Calc BC gave me credit for both 31A and 31B. Now that they changed this, do I still get the credit as it was when I entered or does it change for 09ers as well?

The Orientation folder contains an updated white sheet on the AP calculus credit. The booklet, I believe, is not updated. Why did they not change the booklet? Because changing the booklet is more time consuming and expensive than printing individual sheets of paper.

ella, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the new policy only applies to incoming freshmen.

Well, they changed the math policy just before the start of Orientation Session 101.

wait, i'm not that clear on the discrepencies b/w dragon and cyberdragon's info. what were the differences again?

and is getting 4 units towards math 31A different from being exempt from 31A?

CyberDragoon's information from the orientation booklet is outdated.

Previously, one was able to get Math 31A credit with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam; now only 5's can get Math 31A credit. (A score of 3 or 4 gives you "calculus credit.") To be exempt from Math 31A & 31B one needs to get a 5 on the AP Calculus BC exam.

It's not getting 4 units towards Math 31A - it's getting units for graduation. Being exempt from Math 31A (or 31B) is different from getting "calculus credit."

Colleges of Letters & Science Students:

**Calculus AB score/b

3-4: Calculus (4.0 units)
5: Math 31A (4.0 units)

Calculus BC

3: Calculus (8.0 units)
4: Math 31A + Calculus (8.0 units)
5: Math 31A + 31B (8.0 units)

The change was made as of June 28, 2006. I got the information from the orientation folder they handed out.

so if we got a 5 on calc bc, its not necessary that we take the math placement exam right? we can place out of 31a and 31b already?

yes, that's exactly how it is.

whats the diff between calc and 31 a/b?

are we allowed to bring calculators?

my friends told me you are allowed to use it but that the questions do not require them? im bringing one. what's the harm in having an extra tool to use on the test?
