Which math class do most people place into, and is this test timed/how difficult is it?

Also, say you test into Math 125 (Calc I) and your major requires this class or Math 118x (Fundamental Principles of Calc), are you exempt from taking this class? For example under the Econ major page it says "MATH 118x or MATH 125 is required for the major," so does simply testing into Math 125 take care of this requirement, without actually taking the class itself?

First question- no idea, but I’m sure a lot of people at least get into math 118. I think it was timed and it was okay in terms of difficulty. If you’re rusty with math, practice before or revert to another option *cough have a math geek nearby *cough *cough

The only way you can get out of Math 118 or Math 125 is by passing the AP Calc exam. I think you need a 4 out of 5 on the exam to be waived out. So taking the placement test does nothing for you in terms of getting out a calc.

You don’t have to take the placement exam. I remembered that my roommate was too lazy to take it, but since he was already waived out there was no point in taking it anyway.

Once your ap credit is in the usc records, then you don’t have to take it unless you’re up for a short brain exercise.

I just took the placement test and i got “118 or 125”… what is the difference? what’s the highest math level you can be placed into? and i’m a business major… so which one should i be considering? thanks!

i got 118 or 125 too…i got a 38/40 on it (hehe i was distracted during the test :)) i was thinking that this was the highest option we could get, unless they have another class for people who get 40/40s?

hey, if you’re a business major (like me) then we’re exempt from math anyway if we get a 4/5 on AP calc and stats. i took calc last yr, so im exempt from 118 anyway…and just took stats, so i hope i got a 4 on it :)

For business majors, you would take 118. I believe 125 is for science/engineering majors. But that is the highest you can place into. However, (for business majors) if you get a 4/5 on the AP Calc exam, you will take 218. And then if you have a 4/5 on AP Stat, then you place out of that as well.

there was a range of stuff, inequalities, using the quadratic formula, synthetic/polynomial long division, simplifying radicals, word problems, fill in the length,w,area etc in a picture, exponents, logs, looking at graphs and matching the correct equation, etc

^ so does 30/40
I think the course you take depends on your degree, 118 is fundamentals of calculus and 125 is calculus I, like i know that CS requires 125 but business 118

It is hard in the sense that the stuff is so old that it is often difficult to remember. Algebra II type stuff. Perhaps try some math II SAT tests, which is probably harder than you need to know

So I took the math placement exam cold turkey this morning and well basically was rushed to complete in in like 35 mins. My score is reflective of this and it said that I placed into math 117:(
I’m in the BCA program, which requires math 118. What should I do? Do you think that I should explain my situation to the counselor and maybe they might understand and place me into math 118, or will this ultimately throw off everything and I will not be able to graduate on time? Basically, is this placement test the end all of everything?

Also, if tits relevant, I made A’s in all of my math courses except for my first semester of pre-calc (which i pulled up to an A the second semester) and statistics.
