So I was looking at the math placements and it's probably what I am most worried about going into UNC. First of all, I am worried because I never took the math level 2 SAT, I was told that's really only necessary if you want to place into a high math or need to get into a higher math class for your major. I plan on majoring in journalism, btw. So I was thinking I would take a math class that is not easy, per say, but not as challenging as further calculus. I was in IB math this past year, and it was really difficult, so I expected to go to college and because of my major take a math class that was a lot easier. Are there any courses that qualify under the general education requirements that aren't going to be super easy math levels because I didn't take math level 2? I'm worried that because I didn't take it, I will be stuck in a math class too easy for me that might look bad on my transcript in the end? Like are there statistics classes and stuff like that? just wondering what type of math english/journalism/non-science or math related majors take. Sorry for the long question!

Did you take the SAT Math I? I think so long as you’re not taking math 110 (college level algebra) you’re going to be fine. Can you get credit for that Math IB course that you took?

I’d recommend STOR 155 (Intro to Statistics) because it’s actually a pre-req for the business school (so obviously it’s not a joke class) and Statistics is actually pretty easy to learn (especially in comparison to calc). It seems like a good “middle ground” type of course.

You can always talk about it with your advisor at CTOPs, so don’t worry!

There’s also STOR 151, which is Basic Concepts of Statistics and Data Analysis. I took both Stats and Calc my senior year, and while I preferred Stats, I did meet some people who found Stats so much harder than Calc, and that didn’t mean they found Calculus easy, not by a long shot. If you’re uncertain, you can always read the descriptions for those two classes and see which appeals to you. However, both STOR 151 and 155 require Math 110.

I didn’t take the Math 2 exam either. I figured if I didn’t get a 3 on either Calc or Stats, I could always suffer through a computer science class or something because I really just am not a math person, but I hope to get a 3 on Stats at least.

You need to take either STOR 151 or 155 to get into the journalism school, anyway. I’m taking STOR 155 this semester, and also plan to major in journalism.

I know that I have to take STOR 151 or 155 which I would be fine with, but I didn’t take either SAT math subject tests, and my IB math placement score will not count because it was Standard Level, not Higher Level, and UNC only accepts HL. So even though I’m way beyond college algebra in math 110 because I took IB calc this year, I can’t place out of it because none of my tests help. My college advisor told me I wouldn’t have to take math level 2 because UNC only wants that for people who intend to take calc in college, big mistake. Plus the next SAT test is not until OCtober, not that I would want to go back and take an sat as a college student, but I guess I would. Do you think I could take math second semester, or is required for both semesters of freshman year?

^ I don’t think it’s required for either semester, right? I thought you just had to get it done before you graduated.

Plan A: I’d meet with your advisor at CTOPs and talk to them about it. Meet with the Math department and see if you can have them place your out of 110 and into the class that you want. (Do you even need to place out of 110 to get into STOR 155?) Here’s the contact info for the person in charge of Math 110 placement:

Plan B: Take the Math SAT I in October. You just have to get a 520 or higher to place out of Math 110 and into Math 130 or 152 (and I think STOR 155). Then you can take STOR 155 in the Spring!

Nope, it’s not required either semester, you just have to get those classes done sometime. I’m not really sure, but I think you have to take one of the STOR classes mentioned above BEFORE you get into the journalism school…so really, you have 4 semesters to take it. I know I had to place out of 110 to get into STOR 155, but I don’t know for sure about 151.

Will I be allowed to do that? I totally will, because I prepared for the subject test, just never took it thinking I didn’t have to.

FYI guys – statistics is NOT required in order to be accepted into the J-School. They do not have a math requirement for the major – only a “recommendation” for the QR requirement. So in essence, one could take a COMP class to fulfill that requirement.
