So I took the placement exam for math in community college and was placed in Intermediate Algebra, one class before Statistics which I need to graduate with.

If I challenge the decision so that I can immediately take Statistics without having to take Algebra, will it work if I attach a copy of my high school transcript which shows that I passed AP Statistics (yet failed the AP exam) and I had a 3.7+ wpa with 2100+ SAT and 750 in math section?

Do you think that department chairs, in general, allow you to skip a remedial class if I showed them that? Or in your experiences, will this blow up in my face? Help please.

This is specific to your community college. Is there a reason that you don’t want to take Intermediate Algebra? I’m assuming it’s not UC-transferable, so it wouldn’t affect your UC GPA anyway.

I skipped a level without attaining the score needed, find a counselor and ask nicely.

I don’t want to take it since it’ll allow me to focus on my other classes and its rubbish remedial taking up time.

they did the same thing to me even though i took precalculus in 7th grade.
they said that my math had expired so they made me take algebra (intermediate) before my UC transferable class. i took algebra ONLINE and it was easy and fun and no problem at all. because the class was so easy for me, it gave me plenty of time to concentrate on my other classes. also, when i took my transferable math class i got the highest score in the class because i had picked up doing mathematics again via the algebra.

one word of warning, get the class done now because you do not want your UC transferable math IP when you apply to transfer. also, you can take algebra online over the summer, actually, that is what i did. taking the algebra pretty much guaranteed that i got an A in my transferable math class. and getting an A in math is key to getting into the top universities because for some kids that is impossible.

“rubbish remedial taking up time.” yeah, a lot of school is like that. at least math is easy for you, not true for some.

good luck.
