Math Placement Question

I recently took the CPT at my CC. I placed math 171, which is pre-calculus algebra according to my CC. What math course on average to entering freshmen place into? Is it calculus or above?

I sucked terribly at the SAT. I got about a 400 in the math section, and on the ACT it was my lowest score also.

I didn't think I'd have a chance getting by remedial courses, but I'm out of the 000's...so I assume that is good.

What do you think?

Most freshmen place into an algebra II class, I believe.

Isn’t Algebra 2 precal? I remember doing some at the end of that course. Or are they different?

Depends on what college you’re at and what field you’re in. At a CC, it’s normal for students to have to take one or more courses before calculus. At your average pretty good state school, science and engineering majors will generally come in ready for calculus, or maybe calc 2, while others might not have quite that much preparation. At a top university (Stanford, MIT, etc.), scientists and engineers are behind if they don’t take multivariable right off the bat, while most non-techie majors are somewhere between calc 1 and multivar.

Short answer, you’re doing okay. If you want to be a scientist or engineer of any kind, though, start cracking books.

Well, I don’t plan on majoring in engineering. Never have. I find it amazing that I even placed in (pre) calculus at all. haha.
