Hey,

So, I’ve taken a year off school and my brain has just about turned into mush. Does anyone have a list of topics that will be tested on the math placement test? I need to go over a few things.

Thanks!

I second that, a list of topics/overview would be great. Anyone?

This topic rocks!! lol anyone?

Hi guys, it’s not much but its a start. Here’s an e-mail I got from a student diplomat regardin the Math Placement tests :

Hey ******,

If you’ve taken the math section of the SATs, then this won’t be all that hard but it’s fine if you haven’t as well. Basically, the test gives you a chance to test out of taking the required math course in your freshmen year, since all freshmen have to fulfill a math requirement once they get to AU (this a 3 or 4 credit math course) unless they test out of it, or have some sort of credit to cover their required level of mathematics knowledge.
Usually IB or A’Level Credit.

The test consists of about 30 multiple choice questions. If you don’t do to great on it, you’ll be placed in a class where you’ll learn any math you need for school, and occasionally, they might change the math course you’re taking based upon your results.
For example, I was originally supposed to take Basic Statistics (to fulfill my math requirement) but after the placement test, I was moved down to Finite Mathematics which was more basic than statistics but also taught me some stuff I didn’t know since I hadn’t taken math since my O’levels either.

This link will give you some more information about the math placement test - [Undergraduate Requirements](http://www.american.edu/provost/registrar/regulations/univrequirements.cfm)

And this is a link to some sample questions from the summer math placement test (which is the same thing)

I wouldn’t stress about it too much, and the finite math courses are actually very interesting and I ended up taking calculus and statistics (in my sophomore year) because I really liked math after taking finite math for my math requirement. So no, you needn’t be worried, you’re welcome to prepare for it if you’d like to (or not) and you’ll be fine.

Hope this helps.
