Math placement test

DS is coming in as an engineering major and just did the math placement test. However, he said there was no indication of how good/bad his score was and whether he should consider re-taking it. Does anyone have any better information on scores for this test?

Thanks.

They’re using a completely new system so I have no idea what the scoring system will be. They say on the website that they are still determining the cutoff scores for the exam and will post them here by June 1st: https://mthsc.clemson.edu/cmpt/view_cmpt_score.py

Thanks, Pierre…I didn’t know the system was new this year. Guess we will just have to wait.

You can look at the normal scores for other universities to see how well you did. Usually 80% or higher will get you into a good class.

These are just references to see how good your score is.

Uh, where do we find this placement test? Did I miss this?

EDIT- nevermind, first actualy email in my clemson one in quite a while. how long did it take?

It says it takes about 90 minutes. I spent about an hour and got 90% on it. It’s not difficult, just tedious.

Shoot. I guess I’ll get started. Anyone know when I need to have it done by?

needs to be done by the first orientation session (June 17th)

Interpretation of scores is up.

Darn it I guess I have to retake it. I got a 79 from kinda rushing.

Will ap credits override this? I definitly have AB credit and probably can have BC as well.

Yes AP credits will override the math placement score, here’s the AP credit charts to see what credits you can get: http://www.clemson.edu/admissions/undergraduate/documents/apcreditchart.pdf

So I don’t need to worry about retesting then? Is that written anywhere? And is mtsc 106 the same as 1060 or whatever the placement test says?

oh yeah I forgot this year they switched to a completely new course numbering system with an extra number at the end (0=class, 1= lab), so yes MTHSC 1060

You can retake it if you want but if you have AP credit you can definitely use that.

That was my assumption, thanks!

Can someone explain this to me? In engineering program and first math requirement is 1060. Got a 64 but regretfully flew through it. Will take it again. On the chart, it says 1050 next to my score range. Does this mean I have to take 1050 before 1060? Or does it mean I scored at a comparable level to 1050 and thus do not have to take 1050, but can go straight to 1060?

The class listed is the class that you got placed into. Unfortunately MTHS 1050 is not 1060 (it’s a pre-calculus class). Definitely take it again since you’ll want to start out in 1060 if at all possible

So to be clear, I got a 79. I can easily get the 80 to get into MTSHC 1060.

But… I have AP credits for that already, and probably for 1080 as well. Do I need to retake it?

If you have AP Credits for MTHS 1060 (do you know your score yet? if you aren’t positive, I’d retake it just in case), you do not need to retake the math placement test since you can use that to get placed in a math class.

Yeah I got a 5 on that last year. Probably have some MTSC 1080 coming this summer too!
