Math Placement Test?

Is the math placement test mandatory for all freshmens? I feel like there's no point in me taking the test because I never took Calculus (or pre-calc) in high school (because I was put into AP Statistics).

P.S. I'll be an engineering major.

Its mandatory for all freshmen unless you place out with AP Calculus, but in that case we recommend you take it anyways. It will determine the math class you start out in once you start classes.

Has anyone been able to successfully use the math practice assessment? Can not get the graphs to show - Have tried IE, Firefox, but still no luck. And, yes, Java is installed. Have changed security settings to lowest and still won’t work.

Also wanted to confirm - no calculator on the exam?

When are the math placement results given - so level is known to be able to register for correct level math class

Anyone know when math placement exam results are received? Do you find out immediately, do you find out at Orientation when you meet with an advisor?

If you take the exam on campus, you find out your results immediately. (If you take it in Manhattan, it takes a few days.)

What does a level 5 correspond to as far as content of the test - Part II/Precalc, Part IIIa/Calculus, IIIb, etc.?

Also, can you confirm if you can start the test at Precalc or must you start with Algebra section?

Here’s the list for the math scores: http://studentaffairs.stonybrook.edu/orientation/freshmen/math_placementfr.shtml

A 5 places you into Calc I (MAT 131).
