Do we have to take the math placement test even if we have a 5 on the ab and bc test? Also if I mess up on the placement test will the ap scores override the test?
Everyone has to take it regardless of AP scores but AP scores do override the math placement test score
Just to add to your question, does anyone know how difficult it is? I havent taken a math class since freshman year (transfer student) and I really don’t want to waste my time taking math classes that I won’t be needing because I did poorly on the exam.
@md2016woo I took it a few weeks ago, the algebra and algebra 2 is pretty easy but I would suggest brushing up on trig skills before the trig section, I wish I had
@cammiekohl do we have to take it before orientation? or can i take the corresponding calc 1 class at my community college and have that credit transfer over?
Thanks!
@md2016woo - It is my understanding that everyone must take the math placement test and if you don’t take it before orientation, you will have to take it during orientation and that will slow up your registration.
@SoofDad thank you for the information!
sorry one more question! where/ when do we take the exam? do we have to schedule an appointment and take it at the school?
You take the test online. You may have to enroll first. I don’t remember. It was 2 years ago when my D took it, I believe there is a practice test you can take first. Maybe someone can provide more info.
Yes, you have to enroll first and there’s a practice test you can take before the actual test
If you google “UMD math placement test” there’s a page with a bunch of info on UMD’s website. For some reason CC won’t let me link it
@cammiekohl @SoofDad thank you so much! i really appreciate the help
The test seems ridiculously easy
My D is hoping not to take any math in college. She is going to majoring in humanities and she has very high SAT math and 800 math II and 5 in AP calc AB. She hasn’t done math for a whole year because she is taking a gap year in a different country to learn language. For us, it’s good to hear the test is ridiculously easy.
While high SAT and SAT 2 scores are great for admissions, they do not get you out of any college math the way AP test scores do. Here is the info for class equivalencies

@Maxwellequations - If your D’s major does not require any additional math and she gets a decent math placement score, it’s a safe bet that she will get her wish.
@SoofDad Thank you! I’ll tell her to review a few basic things before taking that test so she will do decent.
