math placement test

I just finished the math placement test as an incoming freshan. Do I have to abide by the math recommendation or can I take whichever course I want? I need a specific math course to fulfill prerequisites for other courses. Will the academic advisors take this into account and allow me to go into a higher math course?

You can talk to the professor, and try to get in to a higher level class anyway. You might want to email the head of the math department and explain your situation (were you close to getting the higher placement?).

Wesleyan (and especially the math department) aren't very strict about rules. In fact, the math department, maybe too much so - generally, if you want to take a class and ask the professor, they will tell you "sure, if you think you can handle it!" even when in reality you might not be able to handle it. (I'm speaking from personal experience here :P ) So talk to the professor of the class you're trying to get into (just shoot them an e-mail) and see what can be done. Usually they're very flexible.

matthew, since you've already taken the exam... could you give us a sneak peak of what to expect for those us who haven't taken it yet?
What are the most commonly covered topics?
Did you take Test1 or 2?
:)

matiseijas:

I took test 2 and it was all calculus related topics. Part one was really easy, part two not so much. Hope that helps but i don't remember any specific questions. Reviews derivatives and integration and their uses.

Where do you learn about where to take this test? Is it from the welcome passage. Our nephew has not seen any info on this yet. Thank you.

in his e portfolio he can click on Blackboard at the top and the placement exams are on there. There are instructions for each one. Also, I think there was info about them in the mailing they sent out on June 10.

There are a bunch of language exams and you just take whichever ones you think you might take at wesleyan (unless you got a 3 or higher on the AP exam, then you don't need to). Everyone has to take the math placement exam but you're not supposed to take both of them. You chose either test 1 or 2 depending on your experience with calculus.

i finished the test but i don’t know how to find my recommendation.
