Math Placement Test

So to prepare for the MAE I decided to take the practice online test here:

California Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project

I didn't well at all. I only got 11/40 questions correct, which is a 28% rounded.

Checking here:

UCR CHASS Student Academic Affairs | Undeclared

It said that getting LOWER than a 25% is obviously a bad thing.

My question is: What should I study for the MAE and what was the difficulty level of the actual test.

Thank you for your time.

I think if you have taken Pre-Calculus in high school, you should be able to do alright on the MAE exam.

I never took Calculus in high school, only up to Pre-Calculus and then jumped to STATs AP, and passed it. I got placed in Math 022, which is Calculus for Business. I am not a Business major, so my academic advisor told me to take one of the lower levels of Math (Math 005, Math 008A, or Math 008B) and then take regular Calculus.

I personally thought the actual test wasn’t hard at all. I never practiced for the MAE at all, and got a decent score/result in the end.

does everyone need to take the test? I didn’t receive any notification that i needed to.
I only got an alert that i should take the english exam.

i’m a freshman coming in as an english major.

Well since you’re coming in as an english major, I HIGHLY doubt it. There would be no reason for you to take it.

You still might want to check about having to take the math placement because I know all CHASS majors do have to take some kind of math or a CS class. and I had a friend who I think is a creative writing major thought she didn’t have to take it and then had to during orientation.

I took AP Calculus exams so I never took the MAE -

the test wouldn’t be able to place me any higher than the AP tests did

And yeah, I don’t think humanities/arts majors have to take the MAE.

Yeah,
ALL Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) Majors are required to take the MAE
As well as those in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS).

There are only a few majors in (CHASS) College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences that require the MAE.

They are:
Pre-Business/Business Administration
Psychology
Neuroscience
Liberal Studies
Economics
Economics/Administrative Studies
Economics/Law and Society
Business Economics
Political Science/Administrative Studies
Sociology/Administrative Studies
History/Administrative Studies
Art History/Administrative Studies

Hope that helped!

I suggest you pick up a Geometry, Alg2, or Pre-Calculus book and start reviewing chapter by chapter. Nothing is ever too late, so don’t give up. Work over your limit! yea! Don’t let those dumb numbers put you down. Study hard so you don’t regret.

My teacher once said, “Everyone is smart, only if they are willing to study hard!”(Something along that line, for I cannot recall beyond 5 years or further.)

Also, you have plenty of time until that test. I signed up for the one on June 27th, you? Also, does anyone know why we have to drag our butts down to UCR to take this test? It’s so ludicrous!
