So, I'm a little confused with the math placement testing. My understanding is that if you have a 600 or better on the math portion of the SAT you sign up for Math2A and are not required to take any tests, and if you scored below a 600 AND already took Pre Calc you have the option of jumping up to Math2A by taking and passing the placement test? Otherwise, if you scored below the 600 you would go into Math1A if you opted not to take the placement test? Am I correct here? So basically the placement testing is optional depending on what math class you're trying to get into, right?

bump! Really confused here

where did you get information on SAT results of 600? That would be really cool!

Ok found information…

So I guess the test is free until 6/1/11 and after that it is $25. Here is the list of rules

NEW FRESHMAN FOR FALL 2011:

Your mathematics placement will be based on your score from the mathematics section of the SAT or, in some cases, from your AP Calculus AB or BC score.

If you scored 600 or above on the math portion of the SAT, you will be cleared for Math 2A ((Single Variable Calculus I). You should enroll in Math 2A ONLY if you had pre-calculus in high school.

If you scored 3 on the AP Calculus AB test you will be cleared for Math 2A. If you scored 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB test or 3 on the AP Calculus BC test you will cleared for Math 2B (Single Variable Calculus II).

If you scored 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus BC test you will be cleared for Math 2D (Multivariable Calculus I).

Because your mathematics placement at UC Irvine is based on your SAT mathematics or AP Calculus score you MUST ensure that these scores are submitted to Admissions BEFORE the deadline for transcripts and scores.

Alternative placement: if you wish to take Mathematics 2A and your SAT mathematics or AP Calculus score does not qualify you for the course you have two options:

First, we strongly encourage you to enroll in and complete the Preparation for Calculus learning module offered through ALEKS after June 1, 2011. A score of 70% or better on the ALEKS assessment will place you into Mathematics 2A. You will pay a $25 fee for the service directly to ALEKS. Log-in at [UC Irvine Math Placement through ALEKS](UCInetID Secure Web Login) to begin your ALEKS learning module.

You may have pencil and paper at hand to assist you while you take your assessment.

Academic honesty is an expectation for all UC Irvine students.

ALEKS will provide you with a summary of your assessment at the end of your session. Your placement result from ALEKS will be posted on the Academic Testing Center website within two working days of your taking the assessment.

Second, you may enroll in Mathematics 1B (Pre-Calculus). Mathematics 1B is the second course in a two-quarter pre-calculus sequence. A grade of C in Mathematics 1B will allow you to enroll in Mathematics 2A without regard for SAT or AP scores. Mathematics 1B will be offered during the 2011 Freshman Summer Start Program. For information consult https://summer.uci.edu/fssp/academics.asp

Once you finish the placement exam on ALEKS and you do succeed in earning a 70% or higher, how fast will the UCI system know? I want to take the placement exam and finish it before I enroll in the Winter Quarter, but my enrollment window opens in two days.
