Math Placement

I was just wondering how the math placement works for freshman entering into Stern? Like are we automatically placed into Calc I, and moved up based on SAT's, AP's, or the placement test?

How does the administration determine which score to go by to place you? (if you scored poorly on the AP test but did well on the placement test, or vice versa?)

It depends what type of math you took in high school. It would vary if you only took Pre-Calc senior year compared to if you took AP Calc.

Taking an AP Calc possibly may give you credit, but the placement tests wouldn’t. You can move up and down the calc ladder based on how you do on the placement tests. (Calc I, Calc II…)

thanks fireman…so the math class we take at stern is totally dependent on the placement test (unless we get 4/5 on AP Calc and choose not to take the placement test)? like a bad sat/ap score can’t hurt you at all?

I think it’s pretty hard to go directly to Calc II unless you have AP credit because most people who take Calc II in Stern say it’s a lot harder than Calc I. A bad SAT or AP score can’t hurt you at all. A general rule at NYU is only good SAT/AP scores can help you, bad ones won’t hurt you.

You can take whatever placement exam you want. My recommendation would be to attend the June orientation and take them there so you can get your schedule ironed out without having to worry about changing it during Welcome Week if you successfully place into a higher course.

If you can place into Calc III, go for it, otherwise, stay in Calc I. Calc II is a nightmarish class that branches off tangentially to Calc I and is harder for most kids than Calc III, oddly enough.

So a placement exam (other than the APs) are available for NYU? Im confused, because I thought I had to redo Calc 2 because of the lack of an AP exam.

If you’re a boss you can go directly into Calc III through a placement exam. There’s a bunch of placement exams you can choose to take. If you haven’t taken an AP exam, you’ll likely be in Calc I, but you could beast it and go into Calc III.

Can you place into Calc III if you already took Multivariable Calculus? I took AP Calc BC Junior year and got a 5 and I’m taking Multivariable calc this year. If I want to retake Calc III freshman year, do I still need to take the placement exam for Calc II? (lol I forgot a lot of series stuff from last year and don’t really want to relearn stuff from last year)

thanks guys. I’m okay at math, but i dont think calc II or III is right for me; we only need one math class in our entire stern careers, right? If this is the case, I may just not take the AP test. And since i got an 800 on the SAT I and II in math, I wouldn’t need to take the placement test in june or welcome week right? I’d just be placed in calc I?

Does anyone know if tisch film students need to take math? I was looking at the requirements, and it seemed like any science would fill the requirement.
