Math placement?

I'm really confused about how you are placed into a math class. Are you placed into one based on your high school transcript or do you have to take a placement exam?

The checksheet for my major has Math 1016: Elementary Calculus w/Trig for the freshman fall semester.

Generally speaking Tech isn’t going to “place” you in any course. Take a look at the course check list for your major and during summer orientation you will request the necessary classes. If you don’t think you are ready for Math 1016 then by all means discuss that with your advisor. If you are ready, and don’t have any Math AP credit then you just request Math 1016 for Fall semester.

There is a placement test if you want to use AP credit to get out of the first Calc class to make sure you still have some knowledge of it. Besides that I’m not aware of one.

chuy - Does that placement test apply to dual enrolled students?

If you want to skip calc I and take calc II at VT I’m pretty sure it applies. I don’t know otherwise.

Calc 2 has a pre-test you have to pass to take it regardless of what you do, but the test is really a joke and its done math empo style (you get to study the test questions). I got dual-enrollment credit for calc 1 and that was the only “test” I took.

Random 1206 syllabus I pulled up: http://www.math.vt.edu/people/esaflop/class_policy//1206_14364.html</a></p>

Actual test info page http://www.math.vt.edu/courses/math1206/index.php?page=bst</a></p>

marty212 - Did you feel you were prepared entering into Calc 2 after skipping Calc 1? And were you an engineering major?

I can’t answer for him but I would have been bored to absolute tears taking a Calc I class again after AP in highschool.

My son is an ME major (Jr now) and he did just that. Skipped MATH 1205 (based on getting a 5 on the AP Calc exam, not Dual Enrollment) and took MATH 1206 Fall Freshman year. No problems and is glad he did it as it made his Junior year much lighter since it is/was a bear of a year. Note: he also took Differential Equations during the summer at a community college (b/t freshman and sophomore year) so he had NO math classes during Sophomore year.

Meant, made his Sophomore year easier without have the added difficulties of Multivariable Calc and Differential Equations…

Yeah, that too. Freshman year is a transition of course but the classes in general aren’t that hard. Moving some of the difficulty load off of Sophomore year onto Freshman year is a good move.
