Math Placement

I am currently enrolled in Calculus AB and was working on the Pre-Orientation homework... The Math Placement test said this:

"The following students need not take the Mathematics Placement Exam: Students who have had a year-long Calculus course in high school with a grade of at least B are eligible to start with Math 118 (Business Calculus) or Math 125 (Calculus I) but must request permission to register for these courses from the Department of Mathematics. Students who have taken the AP Calculus exam may be eligible to waive, Math 118, Calculus I (Math 125) or Calculus II (Math 126) as a prerequisite for later courses if they have received a score of 4 or 5. A score of 5 on the BC version of this exam is needed to waive Math 126 as a prerequisite for more advanced courses."

Do I take the placement test, then? I now I will have an A in that class, but I don't know if I will get a 4/5 on the test since we won't have scores for it until july...

same question bump!

i took AP Calc AB and got a 5, but i still took the placement exam. it's easy enough...if you've gotten this far along in math, there's nothing to sweat. the most you have to gain by not taking the placement test is a few hours by yourself wandering around campus, while the majority of people take exams :p. that's not necessarily bad, but you'll have lots of opportunities to do that.

actually, from what i remember, i think they recommended that if you're not sure about taking a placement test, take it anyways to be safe. they only take about an hour a piece, and aren't hard if you did well in those classes during high school. i even did well in the chem placement exam, a class i took junior year, and i'm pretty sure i didn't review, at least not much.

does your major require you to take calc, or more importantly, require you to take calc your first semester? (due to tight engineering schedule, for example)

think of it in terms of worst case scenario. Suppose you don't take the math placement and you end up not doing well enough in the class/ap test to meet that criteria - how screwed do you end up? If it's more than slightly inconvenienced, then take the placement exam.

yeah i probably just will. It's online anyway. And I'm undeclared, so...

I have a question concerning this, too...

I don't think I got a 4/5 on the AP Calc AB exam. I am a business major, but I really don't want to take Calculus (Math 118 at USC) again... If I do VERY well on the placement exam, will I still have to take math 118?

The "placement" test is really to see if your basic algebra skills are good enough to take college-level math, or need remedial math. It is easy for most people. Nothing to worry about. It does not however get you out of any requirements.

man it was sooo easy. I can't believe I missed two.

is there trig and/or calculus on the placement or just algebra/geometry?

also... if you score into remedial (haha math is not my strong suit) but your major doesn't require math, do you still have to take remedial math classes?

no calc. a bit of trig/geometry (think "soh-cah-toa") and mostly algebra...

hey - if you've taken business calc, you're done with calculus (unless another calculus class is required for your major)... right? anyone know if bus calc fulfills the requirement for neuroscience or biology?
