Can anybody tell me how math placement is determined (Calc I, II, or III)? Is it solely through AP exams or is there a placement test?

As far as I know you can sign up for calc II/III even without getting an AP/IB score that places you out of calc I/II. You won’t get credit for the one you skip, but if you think you’re ready, then you can go ahead and take the next level up. And then if you find out that you’re not ready, you can drop it and take the next level down within the first two weeks or so of classes.

Not sure about CLAS but SEAS students take a placement test. Then when you are registered for the appropriate class based upon placement, they have you take the test again and evaluate if you want to stay in the class. They do not force you to switch courses. This is based upon D’s experience this past year.

For CLAS you can indeed skip any classes you think you already know the material for.

My son took the second semester of APMA calculus (applied math sequence for engineers). He had a 5 on AP calculus AB but found the APMA class very challenging; it assumed knowledge of stuff not covered in his high school class so he had to scramble to teach himself that background. Perhaps he would have done better to take the APMA sequence from scratch. He did OK in the class, enjoyed it very much, and felt he learned a lot, but it was a ton of work.

There is also a calculus sequence in the College, offered through the math dept., with somewhat different emphases.

yes notice how i didn’t say “that you took in hs” because that is a lie, calc at uva is only slightly less weird than calc at penn where you basically don’t even get ap credit unless you have a 5 on the bc exam

Okay then. Regardless of how I did on my BC exam, I’ll sign up for Calc II.

um if you do well on your BC exam you should DEFINITELY take calc 3.
i did not feel I did well on my BC exam at all (though I did get a 5 thanks to the weird curve…) and couldn’t really remember much from my BC class, but I took calc 3 and got an A.
Calc 2 is REALLY hard.
I was actually in the same situation last year and got the same advice (I think from hazel?) and I’m really glad I didn’t take calc 2. Really glad.

yeah calc 2 here is treacherous

How so? It can’t be more difficult than Calc III, can it?

when they’re trying to weed you out it can
