I am about to take the math placement test. I took AP Calc BC this year, so while I’m pretty sure I will be OK, there are some things that I think I may not have looked at since freshman year or earlier. Realistically I won’t have time to study. If I got a 4/5 on my BC exam, will this over-rule my scores on the placement exam and allow me to enter the higher level class? Just asking because if I DO do poorly on the placement exam, it is probably more a reflection of the fact that I haven’t looked at math in over two months and haven’t done some of the topics in a few years.

118 or 125
I got 40/40 in my placement test
800 in both SAT and SAT II Math

I got into 108, 116, or 117. 117 is Introduction to Math for Business and Economics, but I was hoping to get in 118, which is the Principles of Calculus. I already took AP Calc in 12th grade, did well and while I bombed my AP exam cuz I didnt bother studying(I got a 2), I KNOW I can definitely re-take calculus in college. I REALLY don’t want to have to go through Math 117 before taking Math 118, God. That would be beyond annoying. Can I ask my academic advisor to place me in 118 straight away?

I just answered my own question by calling the Orientation Office, so I figured I’d share. According to the woman I spoke to, the Advisement Office “recommends” that all students take the math placement exam regardless of their AP scores. However, if you did well enough to waive a pre-req class, the AP score will overrule the placement exam. So since I got a 5 on my AP calc exam, theoretically my placement test doesn’t matter, but they say to still take it just so they have it on file just in case. This is the only opportunity to take it online so they say its worth it, though ultimately it is our choice?

Long story short, I can go into the math class I want, but I do need to take the placement exam (even though it doesn’t matter really if I bomb it because I have my backup AP score).

Malik, I’d call the office, they can answer your questions. 213-740-3788

Thought I would bump this thread…

You can specifically request for a retake of the placement test when you get to USC in August. There will be a date and time in which you will complete a Paper and Pencil test (it is not online).

Unfortunately, you cannot be placed into 118 without proper certification (placement test, AP credit).

Either call Orientation services (number listed above) or the testing bureau (213) 740-7166 to schedule a reexamination. Good luck!
