Math Problem

Hello,

I'm looking to get into a very good, possibly Ivy League school.

I am having math issues right now:

Frosh: Geometry
Soph: Alg. 2/Trig
Junior: Deciding between AP Statistics or Pre-Calculus
Senior: Deciding between AP Calculus or NO MATH

The reason I wanted to take AP Stats junior year is because I want it to boost my GPA.
If I take Pre-Calc it will not boost my GPA if I get an A. Don't colleges want to see that you challenged yourself in Junior year? I will only have 3 AP's in Junior Year if I dont take AP Stats, but then I won't have anything to take Senior Year!!

My major is BUSINESS. Intended Schools:

Wharton - UPenn
Haas - Berkely
Stanford
Harvard
Princeton
Yale

ETC...

I didn’t know there was a major called Business…

What?
I don’t get it, was that supposed to be sarcastic?

take precalc then calc, most top schools like their students to have seen calculus.

Hey it would look bettr if u took pre calc and them calculus
especially if ur not good in word problems which is mainly all of what stats is

If you avoid tough classes, you’ll be at a serious disadvantage with your peers. Go for it and do what it takes to excel at those tough classes. AP Stats for a better GPA vs. taking a tough class and “I won’t have to take a tough class as a senior…” – this is the exact mindset that top schools are looking to weed out.

If you aren’t willing to re-evaluate this mentality, your chances are slim to none at the top schools. Your teachers who might write your recs are probably aware of this as well.

Take classes to learn. Learn how to love learning – not just to attract the eyes of “top” schools.

Otherwise your moniker will be shown to be way off…

BTW: “Business” is not a major offered at several of the schools you listed.

Good luck to you and the remainder of your HS career.

Correct. This is very basic research to do about colleges before applying to them, checking what major programs are offered.

See the FAQ linked to in my signature block for more advice.

can you go AP Stat then AP Calc?

Business… I’d go for stats!
But… you could do both!
I took both PreCal/Trig and AP stat my junior year!
it’s totally manageable!
but I defitely liked AP Stat more!
especially since I’m taking like 4 AP science classes
it comes in handy most of the time!

You need to take pre-calc for the schools you list. If you need another AP, double up in math junior year with pre-calc and AP Stats, then take AP Calc senior year.

At most top schools there is no such thing as an undergrad “business” major. Wharton is an exception. At Harvard and Yale you would probably major in economics, and study “business” when you go to professional school for your MBA.

top colleges like Penn advise you to take calc. In fact during the info session at wharton, the admit guide specifically told us.

i would try to take calc junior year, if that’s possible at your school.
maybe you could do pre-calc over the summer at a CC or other college.
AP Stats is really, really hard so i think that would be best for Senior year.
