Hi, I'm really interested in Vassar as it seems like a really good school and probably a good fit for me in a lot of ways. I'm pretty certain that I want to major in math, and I was wondering how the math department compares to other departments at the school, since I've heard that math isn't Vassar's strong point, and the school is more focused on things like english, humanities etc. Also, how is math there compared to other similar schools?

According to my friends who are sophomore in VC, the math in VC is not as good as it is in Hamilton, or in Smith… It’s true that VC focuses more on humanities and social studies…

S1 and one of his friends were science majors at Vassar and are now attending top graduate schools. Their mathematics experience at Vassar was strong and allowed them to go on in their chosen science field. You may want to check out the higher level classes to see if it works for you, but don’t discount the math and sciences at Vassar especially if Vassar is a fit for you in other ways. Try to schedule a visit with a mathematics professor when you visit. The new science building is in progress and they are renovating some of the existing science buildings this spring.

i freakin love the mathematics department here. just look at them on ratemyprofessors; the department has amazing faculty. the science departments are also very strong. i think math gets a bad rep here because, since we do attract a lot of humanities majors, most only take it for the QA requirement.

seriously though, i LOVE the math department.
