<p>x is under line M. The angle on the OTHER side of line M (on the right) is 180 minus x since it is supplementary to x (both angles add up to 180 degrees).
The angle on the right of y is equal to the same thing, 180 - x, because it is in the same position in relation to the diagonal line and one of the parallel lines, P. So the degree of y is 90 - (180-x) since both angles are complementary. </p>
