Math Question/ Online Course

Is it me or something but are the online course questions sorta different from the ones that we typically see on QAS or actual tests?

and here is a math question:
18. In the xy plane, an equation of line l is y=3x-1. If line m is the reflection of line l in the y axis, what is the equation of line m?
a.y=-3x-1
b.y=-3x+1
c.y=3x+1
d.y=-x/3-1
e.y=-x/3+1

If p<-5 or P>5, which of the following must be true
I.P^2>5
II. abs(p)>5
III. P^3>5

for the first one I think its “A”

and for the second one I and II are correct.

yeah ur right… i have a general idea of why cause apparantly p can be either one so it has to pass 2 conditions. and for the relection, it has to be negative… i assumed it to be negative and perpendicular…

more questions:
2.In the figure above, lines k,l and m are parallel. if y = 125, what is the value of x +z?
answer = 110, i have no idea cause the picture looks like its obtuse angles… sorry i don’t have a scanner… this is from test 5 i believe.

There are k students in a class, only one of whom is a junior. If 5 seniors are added to the class, how many students in the class will not be juniors?
a.k+1
b.k+2
c.k+3
d.k+4
e.k+5

The quadratic function graphed above has equation f(x)=a-x^2. Which of the following must be true. correct answer is a>0. The parabola is downwards, and it is raised from the origin.

Its a figure of a triangle with hypotenuse 20 and sides a and b. Which of the following inequalities is true about the lengths a and b of the sides of the triangle above?
a.0<=(a+B)^2<20
b.20<=(a+b)^2<40
c.40<=(a+b)^2<100
d.100<=(a+b)^2<400
e.400<=(a+b)^2

The first one is A.

For the second one, numeral II is, at least, one of the answers because…

If p is greater than -5 or greater than +5, it’s distance from zero in either direction would have to be greater than 5.

6 is “D” because it is k-1+5…

8 i think is “E”…

okay i know the right answers… i need explanations people.

When you reflect a line over the y axis, the slope on the reflected line will have the opposite sign of the slope of whatever the original line’s was (with the same y-intercept).

I already explained my rationale for picking B on the “P” variable question. Consider P=-6: numeral I works, so I believe A and B are the correct answers. C doesn’t work, so you can eliminate it.

ahh i see thanks jef i understand those 2… this is the first time on a Colleboard test that i’ve seen that p can be either postive or negative… so basically 2 conditions. and i assumed that when u reflected over the y axis it would be perpendicular… no idea why but ur explanation makes sense. now what would happen if you reflected over the x axis?

Pretty much the same thing, except you’re gonna flip it vertically. So, if your line is in, say quadrant I, you just flip it over. Let’s say your y-intercept in quadrant one is… +3. Well, your y-intercept for your reflected line will just be opposite (-3). If line one has a positive slop, then your second, reflected one, will have a negative slope. Here’s a visualization of a reflection transformation about the x axis:

I’m not the best at technical writing, but I hope this helps a little bit.

ahh so slope is also opposite sign… i see. thanks… now someone help me with the other 3 lol…
