<p>My reasoning is the following:</p>
<p>Total 4 letters but since you can only have 3 letters, and use each letter once…</p>
<p>that means there are 3 slots, not repeating.</p>

<p>4 x 3 x 2</p>
<p>4 to choose for the first slot, 3 to choose from for the 2nd slot, and 2 to choose from for the last slot.</p>
