Math Question....

hi- I currently took Calculus I and planned to take Calc II in the fall. however, I can't fit my schedule with the times offerered in Calc II, so now i have to decide whether to take Calc III or Linear Algebra, both only require a prerequiste to Calc I. My question is, which class would fit me better with my recent Calc I background and still remains fresh in my head. Do both classes really require Calc I? Does it matter which class I choose? Is it about the same difficulty?

thanks

Take linear, and then take Vector (Calc 3) after you take Calc 2.

Linear will be less calculus intensive, and you will not be as disadvantaged as you would be in Calc 3 without Calc 1.

So, it would be all right for me to take Linear Algebra before Cal II?

Neither of them are a good idea to take before calc 2, but linear algebra would put you at less of a disadvantage than vector calculus.

I'm only suggesting this to the OP because he has a conflict. You shouldn't CHOOSE to do Linear before Calc2

Linear doesn't rely that much on Calc, so you should be fine taking it. I'd definitely recommend against Calc III because you'll either have trouble getting retroactive credit for it or you won't want to go back and take it later at all.

It's just that I don't want to take the 5-week Cal II course over the summer.

maybe i had a bad teacher but in my calc III class the only concept we used from calc II was taylor's expansion (which obviously changes from single to multivariable anyway because your dealing with partial derivatives). calc II deals entirely with infinite series and sequences and otherwise never comes up in multivariable. im taking linear next semester so i cant speak for that class but ive heard its the "easiest" advanced class (if there is such a thing) so i would imagine its possible to do without calc II.
