Math question

If the length of a rectangle is increased by 30% and the width of the same rectangle is decreased by 30%, what is the effect on the area of the rectangle?

A - It is increased by 60%
B - It is increased by 30%
C - It is unchanged
D - It is decreased by 15%
E - It is decreased by 9%

The answer is E, which I'm having trouble understanding. When I work it out, the original area of xy becomes .91xy (x = length and y = width.) How does this show a 9% decrease?

you were just one step away!

1-.91 = .09 so a 9% decrease

Oh. I never knew that was the way to figure such a thing out. Ok, thanks.
