So I only took 1 semester of math this year. (statistics) and I took algebra 2 my junior year. I'm scared for the math placement that I will be placed in a really low math class because maybe I've forgotten everything. I took the csu math placement and I barely passed it and it said I was ready for college level math. I at least want to get into math 3, esp b/c my major requires beyond calc. will this be difficult?

It’s nearly impossible to NOT get into Math 3. You’d have to score less than 20 on the exam, out of 60 points. Just brush up on your algebra, then go to the math department website and look at the things they recommend for studying for the test. You can probably teach yourself some trig to boost your chances. It’s definitely not that hard! Good luck.

You can take the test during orientation in July, right?

Yup yup. Or you can take it during the first week of school, but you’ll have to scurry to change classes at the last minute. :P

I took AP stats my senior year and there was absolutely no stats on the math placement. It was all algebra 2, trig and geometry. I highly recommend reviewing all this. There is a practice exam and study guide on the math department website. Since I didn’t review, I did so poorly that I barely made it into math 2 and if I hadn’t made it into math 2, I would have had to take math at community college since math 2 is the lowest math they offer at UCSC. Of course, math 2 was a total review of all algebra and trig and if I would have just studied, I’d be further ahead now. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Wait. Does everyone take the math placement exam, or are you exempt if you passed the ELM/ got a certain SAT score??

Im pretty good at algebra/kinda geometry. But I just remember the basics.

Only people who plan on taking math classes take the math placement exam.

If you never plan on taking math, you never have to take the placement exam.

Wait so even if you’ve scored high on the math portion of the SAT and have taken (and hopefully passed) an AP Calculus test, you still have to take a math placement test?

Nope. You DEFINITELY place out of testing if you scored a 3 or above on the AP exam.

… I heard that if you get above a 550 on SAT math you don’t have to take placement tests? Is that just for CSUs?? I’m so confused :(

That doesn’t apply to the UCs. ):

I’m not sure about SAT’s score but I didn’t have to take the Math placement exam because I had gotten a 3 on an AP calc exam. If u get a 3 or higher on an AP calc exam u can automatically enrolled into at least Math 11A without taking the placement exam.

… balls.

isnt math a requiered class (part of GE requierement Q)?

You technically don’t need to take a “math course” for your Q requirement. I’ve had friends take astronomy, chem, oceans, and intro to logic for the Q req.
