I have no ideal on how to solve this =s The answer is D

In an art class, 2/3 of the students are girls and 2/5 of girls are seniors. If 1/3 of the senior girls have passed the final art test, which of the following could be the total number of students in the class?

In an art class, 2/3 of the students are girls and 2/5 of girls are seniors. If 1/3 of the senior girls have passed the final art test, which of the following could be the total number of students in the class?

a) 15
b) 20
c) 30
d) 45
e) 60

Let’s start with choice (C) as our first guess. Then there are 30 total students, 20 are girls, 8 of the girls are seniors, and since 8 isn’t divisible by 3, choice (C) isn’t the answer.

Let’s try (D) next. Then there are 45 total students, 30 are girls, and 10 senior girls have passed the test. This works, so the answer is choice (D).

Here I used the method of Strategy 1 from my book (which I think you have). This isn’t the quickest method for this problem, but it’s a pretty good one and will get you the answer pretty easily.

“Let’s try (D) next. Then there are 45 total students, 30 are girls, and 10 senior girls have passed the test. This works, so the answer is choice (D).”

Answer is D, but, unless I read the problem wrong, the solution was a bit different.

In an art class with 45 students , 2/3 of the students are girls. [30]
From those 30 girls, 2/5 of girls are seniors. [12]
1/3 of the senior girls have passed the final art test, [4]

As Zack says, the group has to be divisible by 45.
