<p>Note: In the above chart the first column is distance (unknown), the second column is rate, and the third column is time which I computed using d=rt, or equivalently t = d/r.</p>

<p>Since the two times add to 1, we have:</p>

<p>d/45 + d/30 = 1</p>

<p>We need to solve for d. I’m going to start by multiplying both sides of the equation by (30)(45)</p>

<p>30d + 45d = (30)(45)</p>

<p>75d = 1350
d = 1350/75 = 18</p>

<p>Remark:I multiplied by the product (30)(45) to clear the denominator. I could have multiplied by the lcd to keep the numbers smaller, but that would require more thinking, and you can use a calculator anyway.</p>
