Math - required?

I took AP calc bc in high school - 4 on exam. I'm currently taking calc 3, and i plan on discontinuing my math courses because i think it's unnecessary for medical school. Do most schools require 1 year of math in college or just up to calc 2?

Given that many programs don't accept AP credit, the distinction is moot. Take them again.

what are your suggestions for someone who may get a 5 on BC calc, but really hasn't understood everything? should he/she withhold the score and do calc II, or just go on to calc III?

Depends on what material you didn't understand. Series and sequences you can probably move on. Differentiation and integration, redo Calc II.

if i choose to redo calc II, then i'd just take that and then Stats? would it be advisable to take calc III too?

Calc I on credit + Calc II and Stats at the university should have you covered.

if you want to be absolutely, 100% sure, then take a year of calc and a year of stats, though this is overkill at probably 99% of med schools. Only a handful require a year of calc (though the ones that do are not the sort of schools that would look kindly on ap credit), and I have heard of one or two that strongly recommend a year of stat (USC comes to mind, though it is not required). Generally, a year of one and a semester of the other should be sufficient, I'd feel a little uneasy with a just a semester of each.

if they require a year of calc, they won't care whether it's I,II,III right?

correct (10char)

is there a huge advantage to taking up to calc III instead of calc II?

wouldn't saying yes patently contradict the answer you were JUST given?

lol (10 char)

i meant like how much more would it help me, does it look better, etc.

wouldn't saying yes patently contradict the answer you were JUST given?

education-wise? would it help me do better in other classes, for instance the sciences?

not likely, except maybe to improve your general problem-solving ability (a rational I believe BDM has advocated in the past). The real question is simply how much you like calc. If you like it take more, if not, then don't - it's that simple.

It might. It also might not. I was a chemistry major, and Calc III was recommended, but not required. I took it. Did it help me? I don't think so. Maybe it helped other people.
