Hey, would math research/research summer programs be considered a hook for Ivy Leagues? Like, if I am really interested and passionate for math, and have done math/science summer programs, research projects, competitions? Thanks!

im just curious, math research? what do you research? i was completely unaware this kind of thing existed.

they certainly help your case a lot

Yes, it especially helps if you show true interest and not just doing it to get into college

really? nice..any other advice? thanks! bumpppppppp

how do you go about starting math research or any form of scientific research in general?

Well...I'm taking a college math class...so I have connections with my professor. But my question is..how much would it affect/have an impact on my acceptance rate to elite colleges?

theyll love you forever. they just want to see that youre a passionate person and not just going somewhere for its good name

I'm pretty sure that isn't how a hook is defined.

what do they want you to do? create theories and publish essays before youre in college? being involved in research before youre even a senior is pretty impressive

Ummm what level math course? I don't think it's really that easy to do research in math as a high school student, no offense.

^yea but my math prof told me he is willing to do one with me, and help me, even though i am not at that level.

Then do so. What you'll do won't be impressive (sorry, college level math is just.. different. A lot) , but the fact that you'll do it will be a hook.

I did a lot of math research in high school (actually not "research", but I was good enough to work with numerical tools, like finite elements for PDEs or even simple concepts like splines - for computer graphics, or validation of algorithms) and I helped college professors TeXing their papers.
It did pay of. A LOT. I was ASKED to apply by my dream college.

Great idea! I wish I had thought of that!

Haha, wow thanks Alexander. Anyone have any good websites for learning how to use LaTex? I have it downloaded but haven't looked at it..is it complicated? Just curious. Thanks

you just learn it as you go, kind of like programming or driving.
if you want practice you could go on art of problem solving. latex is like their native language, so if you post a lot there you should get pretty good with it.
then again, i am not very good with latex, so don't listen to me :p
