math reu

I'm a sophomore math major and might possibly be interested in applying for a few math reus for this summer. I'm wondering if its not too early. By this summer i will have completed courses in calc, linear algebra, multivariate calc, discrete math, real analysis, and topology. I have also have some experience working a physics lab doing research. Would that be considered beneficial even though I haven't produced anything useful?

Another thing i'm worried about is that my gpa kinda sucks. Right now it is sub 3.0 but after this semester it should definitely be above 3 and hopefully around 3.2 or 3.3. I had no business being in honors calc last year, but after having taken it analysis is a piece of cake and my ta said i am very likely to get an a in it. Are reus very competitive?

The good REUs are extremely competitive. I don’t know much else about them, though. Ask your professors for suggestions and if they think you’re qualified and can be admitted to one.

What are the good ones?

Out of the ones that have updated their sites so far, the ones I have found interesting are suny potsdam, and rose-hulman.

The most competitive ones will be out of your reach. After sophomore year is a good time for a math REU, as is after junior year. The MATH gpa is most important. Good time to start researching them.
