Hey, I'm currently a junior in HS hoping to get into Caltech next year. I just got back my March SAT scores and got a 740 on math. I know this is low for Caltech, and I'm thinking I should retake.

But I already got an 800 on the SAT math level 2 exam, so I'm wondering if it's really necessary to retake the whole SAT. Of course I know there is a lot more that goes into getting into Caltech than my SAT scores, but I just want to know if not retaking it is going to hurt me significantly. Any opinions would be appreciated. ^^

Also my reading score was 780 and writing was 740, if those matter at all.

Yeah, I wasn’t trying to imply that my math level 2 score is anything special, I know that the scores on it tend to be high anyway. And I know my 740 sucks, but I thought that having a high score on the level 2 would demonstrate that I know basic algebra/trig math. I really do not want to take the whole SAT again, it’s not the most fun thing in the world. =[

But I know I can get a higher score, I just need to be more careful and not make so many stupid mistakes. So I think I will take it again this summer. Thank you both for responding. =]

OK, I do not normally chance students as I do not know the total profile. Here are some facts:

The middle 50% of the SAT math score was 770-800. In other words 75% of the students got more than 770. The further you are away from 770, the chances decrease dramatically.

Are there other students who got in with 740. I am sure there are, but they would have had a lot of other things going for them.

They are a couple of threads that talk about chances in Caltech and why Caltech is different. Read and then you would be able to assess where you stand.

Again 740 is not a bad score for most colleges. CalTech is different.
