I am a high school junior and I am currently doing my scheduling for next year. I have taken Alg 1, Geometry, Alg 2 and I am currently taking Precalculus. I don't want to take math next year because my only options are either AP calc or AP stats. I'm going to take AP lit, AP gov and leadership, so adding math would be tough for me because I am not really a math person. I'm wondering what kind of an effect not taking math my senior year would have on admissions decisions for college. I plan on going to a UC (LA, Berkeley or SD) and I am in state.

I think math senior year is pretty important (ie more important than 4 years of language). What are your grades like in math?

I have gotten all As except one semsester in Alg 2

AP Stats is easy. It’s not like real math. Take it :)

I got a B+ that one semester by the way. Sorry.

I have heard that. But I also know that some students who got As in Calc are struggling to get As and Bs in Stats, but that could just be something that is based on student abilities…

Were you in the toughest classes or were you in regular sections?

I’m in AP Stat and have a comfortable A. AP Stat is easy; its much more of a social science.

Raiderade–there are only regular sections offered at my school.

Well if you have basically all As in math then I would take the hardest possible classes your school can offer. Meaning, the only time I would drop math in your situation is if my schedule looked something like this:
AP Physics
AP Bio
AP Spanish
AP English Lit
AP Studio Art
AP Government
Meaning that you weren’t taking math not because you didn’t want to put in the extra work, but because you were filling up your schedule with equally challenging classes that better suited your interests.

Stats might be the right thing to do as I’m a social science kind of person. I have heard rumors that my school could be dropping Stats next year though. In which case I’d be stuck with Calc…or nothing.

Raiderade–I know you’re right. Haha. But if I am taking AP and honors classes, are colleges (UC’s) really going to care? Especially if my gpa is still 3.9 unweighted???

Stats is an easy class. To me, Stats=Social Science + Math. So it would suit you well. Plus, it is one of the most useful classes.

jerry-- So, I’m thinking stats is the way to go. Haha. But if stats is not offered next year, would it be worth it for me to take Calc?

If you want to get into Berkeley, it’s a smart idea to take Stat or Calc.

Raiderade–ok. Thanks. You’re pobably right. Don’t want Cal to think I’m a slacker!

well, from some people’s perspective, calc is as hard as stats. However, calc require more mathematical critical thinking than stats. Besides, since u did well in your past math classes, you might as well do ap calc if ap stats is not offered.

jerry–ok thank you. I know I can do it, it’s just a question of how stressed out I am going to be and if all the stress is really worth it. Do you think that taking stats or calc is critical to getting into the schools I am applying to?
