Math Umich or Wash U St. Louis

Luckily, I have received the offers both from Umich and WUSTL. However, I am confused at which one to go.

I want to pick a school which highlights individual value and I want to have a close access to my professors and advisors. Accordingly, WUSTL is better.

But the math programs of WUSTL are poorer than Umich's(?). And Umich provides other national leading programs in other disciplines. As for future careers, I gathered the information that Umich has a huge alumni body almost in every business.

So, which one should I choose?

Have you been invited to apply to the LS&A Honors Program at Michigan? If so, and if you’re admitted to that program, I’d say it’s Michigan hands down. It’s a stronger math department; sky’s the limit how far you can go in math even as an undergrad, because by your junior year you’ll be taking graduate courses in one of the best math departments in the country. And in the Honors Program you’ll have plenty of small classes, great advising, and all your classes taught by top professors.

Even if you’re not in LS&A Honors it’s possible to do an Honors Concentration in math with the approval of the Math Department’s Honors Committee:

Thanks! That is wonderful! Umich indeed provides greater opportunities like Honor Program. I am much more resolved to go Umich!

UMich is definitley more prestigious.

Mathematics is not a common major at Michigan. Most advanced Mathematics classes have fewer than 15 students. Michigan’s Honors sequence in Math is considered one of the best of its kind anywhere.

What sort of campus environment are you looking for? Michigan has the better program at the graduate level but Math PhD programs aren’t really going to differentiate between these schools so you need to decide where you see yourself flourishing for the next 4 years.

Like Alex said, class sizes are going to be small at Michigan for Math since its not a popular major. That being said, its an uncommon major at Wash U so I’d be willing to bet that the class sizes for Math classes there don’t exceed even 10 people so it might provide a more intimate environment. Another pro for Wash U is that its graduate program advising is going to be far superior than Michigan’s whose advising is very poorly developed in comparison to the top private schools. You will have to take more initiative at Michigan when you’re applying to graduate schools for essay help and procuring recommendations when senior year rolls around. However, Michigan has a much more spirited student body in a dynamic and exciting college town so I think most students would prefer Michigan’s atmosphere.

Good luck with your decision!
