<p>Hey guys I'm new here but I have been perusing the forum without an account for quite a few weeks so I am no stranger to CC.
Anyway, I do not know if this is the proper place to be posting this but I am faced with a dilemma. </p>
<p>I am an incoming junior and have good grades and I find that the subjects I excel at most are mathematics and the sciences. </p>
<p>Here is the dilemma, my parents really want me to become a dr. and get a bio major etc. but I am leaning more toward a career/major in math. </p>
<p>I do not know what to do because I feel like if I say something like 'I want to major in math' they will think it is silly.</p>
<p>So what do you guys think I should do?</p>
<p>Also: is it possible to major in mathematics and do pre-med?</p>

<p>PhD in math and be in the movie A Beautiful Mind. I honestly do not know what people do with a math major except either be a teacher or solve puzzles and codes for the gov’t. I think the only way you can major in math and pre-med is if you double major or get all the requirements from pre-med (such as chem, bio, labs, etc), which may take awhile.</p>
<p>Haha well if I would do math then I would go all the way, ie: PhD + later teaching in a U.</p>

<p>I’m pretty sure pre-med is not a major. Pre-med is a program that has elements of biology and chemistry, physics, anatomy, etc.</p>
<p>Now you could do a Bio and Math double major.</p>
<p>^Okay, that’s why I said or do all the requirements for pre-med while majoring in math because I wasn’t entirely sure.</p>

@MIT do you think a double major in Bio + Math would be a good use of my time or foolish and that I should pick one?</p>
<p>Okay, then yeah just double-major. I think getting a PhD to only teach might really really suck… My opinion, though. At least if you double major you’d have a decision of what you’d want to do then go on to medical school.</p>

<p>Okay, so I don’t know a lot about majors and stuff, but why don’t you look for jobs (besides teaching at a U) that involve math? Maybe engineering, architecture, actuary science, etc. You could look on CollegeBoard, they have a career section.</p>
<p>@r0k umm UCLA, USC, Berkley, Brown, Stanford, and Yale, would probably be the ones I will try for although Stanford + Yale may be stretches. And for safety schools probably CSUN and a few others.</p>

<p>Yeah, because a job at a U would be totally worthless if you get your PhD in math! You’d never be away from school. There has to be more than just a job at a U or a gov’t job with codes (which would be cool). I also heard that getting your PhD in math is really really hard. </p>
<p>I think Berkeley would probably be the best school for what you’re looking at.</p>
<p>@MIT just curious, are you going into just general math-math or are you taking it from like a more geometric approach or statistics. Basically: are you going to have an area of focus?</p>
<p>As of right now, I’m looking at things with pure mathematics and theoretical computer science, since I plan to have 2 PhDs.</p>
