I wonder if students are allowed to switch to Wharton after they get accepted to Wharton, without applying to Wharton?

For example, if someone applies for a regular program (not CAS, Wharton, Huntsman, Jerome Fisher, etc.) and gets accepted to Wharton, can he/she switch to Wharton?

yeah it is called an internal transfer. it is a backdoor way of getting in to wharton. i dont agree with it, but it happens all the time.

ex: kid from hs gets decent scores/gpa but not good enough for wharton. applies to College, gets accepted, takes 4 easy classes both semesters of freshman year, gets near 4.0 and makes the cutoff for wharton.

it just pains me that students who challenged themselves with a tough engineering schedule and also have a genuine interest in business are denied on the basis of pure numbers.

Thanks all. I have two follow up questions.

Then, Wharton students, if they do not perform well in the 1st year, cannot get take Wharton classes when they actually choose majors?

What is the point of choosing separately then?
There is no privilege or extra point whatsoever given to “originally accepted” Wharton students from UPenn? - I’m sure that this leeway is commonly played among the acceptees and UPenn KNOWS about it?

^ No, kids accepted in to Wharton get to take Wharton classes regardless of their gpa. In fact, anyone can take Wharton classes, they just probably won’t count toward a degree if the student is in one of the other three schools.

It’s the kids who attend SAS/Nursing/Engineering who need to get a 4.0 during their first year in order to transfer in to Wharton, at which point there are no gpa requirements to stay in Wharton.

People on CC say that lots of the Wharton transfers backdoor their way in. I know a lot of former engineers who transfered into Wharton. There are your students who take 4 easy courses, but there are also a lot who take a fairly challenging course load. Penn lets you transfer into Wharton because it would look really bad if you could internally transfer into the other schools but not Wharton. Kids change their minds about what they want to do with their lives. There are plenty of former engineers and former premeds who transfer into Wharton.

“I wonder if students are allowed to switch to Wharton after they get accepted to Wharton, without applying to Wharton? For example, if someone applies for a regular program (not CAS, Wharton, Huntsman, Jerome Fisher, etc.) and gets accepted to Wharton, can he/she switch to Wharton?”

What the hell does this mean? Wharton is not synonymous with UPenn. lol

Anonymous, Yes as said by Millhouse
I meant “I wonder if students are allowed to switch to Wharton after they get accepted to UPenn, without applying to Wharton?”

But many understood without me rephrasing the question :)

The first person who responded apparently understood the question. Everyone else probably went off of Venkat’s response. I doubt many would’ve understood without somebody first clarifying. Just like Millhouse, I had to read the rest of the responses first before understanding.

Good luck applying to Penn. Be sure to check what you type before submitting anything on the application. A mistake like the one above is a very careless one, yet very easy to catch if you put any effort into it.
