if x-3 < 2 and y+1 >3, then the value of x+y could be

A 0
B 1
C 2
D 4
E 8
I know the answer is A, but I only got that by luck

The question is flawed. It can be any of these.

If x=1 and y=3, then x+y=4. If x=1 and y=7, then x+y=8. If x=-4 and y=4, then x+y=0, etc…

Oh, I made a mistake; y + 1 is LESS than -3, not greater than.

x-3 < 2 <==> x < 5. Also, y+1 < -3 <==> y < -4. Since x < 5 and y < -4 it follows that x+y < 5-4 = 1, and the only answer choice that satisfies the requirement is A. For example, let x = 4.5, y = -4.5.

You were a great help. Thanks
