Math

is it okay for all/most med schools if I take 1 semester of stats & 1 semester of calc-- rather than 2 semesters of calc?? Or will this hurt me in the admission process b/c most people take 2 semesters of calc

It is okay for nearly all to take just one semester of calc. Harvard med seems to be the only place that says explicitly 2 semesters of calc (why, I'm not sure)

thank you~ one more question-- do u check for specific schools by going to their website? or is there a website that includes all of this info?

I just go to there websites.

oh ok. thank youu

i think we need to consolidate which schools require one full year of calc and which just require a year of math (stats and calc).

Bigredmed

This is from Harvard's website:

Mathematics: one year of calculus. Advanced placement credits may satisfy this requirement (Calculus AB - 1 semester, Calculus BC - 2 semesters). A course in statistics does not meet this requirement.

I'm kind of unclear how to interpret this. Are they saying that Calculus BC counts as 2 semesters in calc and thus can satisfy the requirement? Or does one HAVE to take multivariable on top of Calc BC? Thanks.

It seems pretty clear to me that BC fulfills the entire year.

The way I'm reading it is that if you have an appropriate score for Calc BC, probably a 5 I'd guess - and only a 5, then you are free of any responsibility to take a calc course to satisfy Harvards requirements...

However the thing is that other medical schools will not accept AP credit, and thus your are stuck in an unfortunate position of having to take another calc course to satisfy their requirements...

I still don't understand why Harvard requires 2 semesters of calc, but I imagine it might be a way that allows them to cut down on the number of applications they get. I really don't think that there is a medical reason behind such a requirement.

Any schools that require linear algebra?

So far I have a 5 on Calc BC and have taken multivariable calc, linear algebra w/ differential equations, and math stats in college. Hopefully, I won't have to take any more math since it's been awhile since I've taken math.
