So, I have seen a bunch of different posts about people in 8th grade in Algebra 2, or people in 10th grade in AP calculus. I go to a public school (hopeful next year I won't...) and I am in ninth grade. I take Algebra 1 and I thought that that was the norm, but now I am not sure. Will someone help me out!!??

im in 8th and take algebra 1
and i go to a public school too, i think that you are average, so its nothing to worry about, and even if its not, if you have kept your grade up in the class, thats all that matters

I'm in eighth grade and I take Algebra I. I'm in a public school, too.
Algebra in ninth grade is fine.
If you are a good candidate it probably will not hold you back.

My son goes to a Jr. Prep school and they have 2 sections of math in 9th grade - one is Algebra and the other is Geometry. Don't worry about it. Even when we did our visits, the boarding schools offer Algebra I for 9th grade. If it was a problem or not "normal" they wouldn't offer it.

I think math is the one subject where there is a great range of abilities. Schools understand that which is why there is such wide offerings in math most places (including many public schools).

I would like to think that i am a pretty good math student, but my middle school messed me up so much- I pretty much re-learned everything that i learned in elementary school. So thanks! :)

It's okay as long as you have a good grade. I have a friend from camp who takes pre-calculus in twelve grade that goes to Choate and was also accepted to Dana Hall and Cranbrook.

I'm in algebra 2 now, but there are a bunch of people that came from public school that are in algebra 1. It's a little weird to have juniors in some of my classes, but that's for the freshmen and there are enough of them that they don't feel out of place

At Choate, Exeter, Andover, there are plenty of the freshmans who are taking Calc BC or beyond. But also some kids still taking Algebra 1.

Ok- One more question... How can 9th graders be in Calc BC. So, Pre-Calc, 8th grade; Alegebra 2, 7th; Geometry, 6th; Algebra 1, 5th??

Some kids study math during the summer, so they are able to skip a level when they go back to school. After a couple summers they can be 3 or 4 years ahead of the normal curriculum.

i wonder that all the time.
its called "woah..your in THAT class?!"
and theres no other explanation.
=p

Ahah- I see!

hahaha, its true

Jazlyn...Don't worry; it is definitely the exception (even in the top bs) to be taking Calc as a freshman. There are plenty of 9th graders who take Algebra I. My older son and his two best friend all took Algebra I as 9th graders in their respective BS (NMH, Andover, and Exeter). At NMH, the standard freshman course is Algebra I/Physics (they teach it combined). My younger son is in Algebra II as a freshman, and there aren't many other freshman in his class. Our public school did not offer algebra until 9th grade when my older son was there and they did not participate in any of the gifted and talented program. That's how it is in lots of small public school. It will definitely not hurt you.
